On April 22, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his spouse, Chairperson of the Baku-2015 First European Games Organizing Committee  Mehriban Aliyeva, and Vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva acquainted themselves with the conditions created at the Heydar Aliyev Sports Palace after major repair.

No major repair of high level had so far been carried out at the building, which was put into operation in 1990. The building’s facade was totally renewed during the renovation works. Shaped in the form of arch, the facade consists of a structure covered with special material. Special lamps and floodlight have been installed in order to illuminate the facade in artistic style, and an automatic control centre was created. 

In the course of the major repair works, a number of actions have been taken to ensure that the complex meet the requirements provided for big competitions, including those of the international sports federations during the first European Games, and to increase its functionality further. The repair works have been performed taking into consideration the requirements of the European Olympic Committee, Baku-2015 First European Games Operation Committee and related international federations.

The trainings room of the Sports Palace has been built to comply with state-of-the-art standards. Rooms for drawing lots, doping control, medical aid, physicians’ rest room, working rooms and a cafe for international federations, a competition centre, an assembly room for 40 persons, a canteen for 250 persons, kitchen and other working rooms will function here. A press centre for 200 persons, a cafe for correspondents, a conference room for 40 persons, a hall for 350 persons and a cafe for volunteers have been created at the complex. 

Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, as well as judo and sambo competitions among men and women will be held during the first European Games in this Sports Palace, which consists of a main hall and buildings. The number of spectator’s seats in the Sports Palace is increased up to 7830 from  previous 7587. Here, at the same time, have been installed 126 seats for VIP onlookers and 30 seats for physically disabled people. Competition rooms, areas for press, VIP rooms for high-level guests, a centre designed to organize live broadcasting of the competitions have been created  on the highest level. 

During the repair works carried out in the building with total area of 54.8 thousand square metres, internal communication and air conditioning systems have been renewed and floors in the rooms covered with special material of sports purpose. 

With a view to ensuring security in this sport facility, surveillance cameras and 222 up-to-date floodlights have been installed to illuminate the rooms. The building has been provided with broad-band Internet, state-of-the-art acoustic systems,  transformers to ensure uninterrupted operation of the equipment, as well as UPS and generator electricity systems.
