Ali and Nino in a US movie festival and world media

The premiere of the movie Ali and Nino, filmed in 2015, took place. Demonstration of the movie took place in the category of “Premiere”, within the framework of the international film festival “Sundance” of the USA.

Executive producer of the movie Ali and Nino is Leyla Aliyeva, the vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, with producer being Chris Thykier, director Asif Kapadia - a winner of BAFTA award, and written by Christopher Hampton - a laureate of Academy Award.

The movie’s premiere was attended by director Asif Kapadia, producer Chris Thykier, and Adam Bakri, acting as Ali.

Another movie, “Amy”, made by Asif Kapadia in 2015, has been nominated for Oscar in the “Best full-length documentary” nomination.

Filmed on the basis of the same-name bestseller by Gurban Said, the movie Ali and Nino is about the love story between two young people with different beliefs at the time of Russia’s occupation of Azerbaijan early in the 20th century, while Azerbaijan was struggling for its independence.

Main characters of the 104-minute movie are played by Adam Bakri (Ali) and Maria Valverde (Nino). Such famous actors as Halit Ergenc, Mandy Patinkin, Connie Nielsen, Riccardo Scamarcio, Homayoun Ershadi, Fakhraddin Manafov, Asad Bub, Numan Akar etc. acted in the movie.

Presented to the public for the first time, the movie is on the world media’s agenda. Foreign media have given high appreciation to the soundtrack and cinematography of Ali and Nino. In the published materials, they note that the soundtrack evokes nostalgic feelings and, at the same time, is sad, yet hopeful. It is also stated that the movie was shot mostly according to the original work, and that it reflects negative and positive sides of the relations between the two young people, as well as the pressure the are exerted from outside. It is further mentioned that Adam Bakri and Maria Valverde have revived sentimental traits of their characters, and they could always, even in the most difficult moments, manage to keep their cold-bloodedness.
