Opening of general discussions took place at the Headquarters of the United Nations Organization in New York, September 19.
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and Leyla Aliyeva attended the event.
Speaking at the opening of general discussions, UN Secretary General António Guterres said that there were a lot of challenges in the world, and that trust and confidence among the world countries have plummeted. Touching upon the increase in the number of refugees, migration challenges, human trafficking, climate change and other existing global problems, the UN secretary general said peace may only be secured by joint efforts, and mutual trust can be restored.
President of the UN General Assembly’s 72nd session Miroslav Lajčák said that conflicts continuing in the world are causing harm to ordinary people most of all. Having shared his views on such challenges as poverty, climate change and international terrorism, he underscored that these problems are having direct impact on peoples’ lives. Miroslav Lajčák noted that securing peace and prevention of wars should be one of the main directions in the UN’s activity.
Then President of the Federative Republic of Brazil Michel Temer shared his views on the subjects under discussion.
President of the Unites States of America Donald Trump touched upon the necessity of the UN’s activities’ being more efficient. He said states should defend interests and future of the nations. The US president noted that the world countries should work together, and be united against threats. Donald Trump thanked Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon for receiving refugees from Syria.
